Cult-Favorite Bay Area Pun Off Launches NYC Residency at Caveat Starting May the Fourth (be with you!)
A sold-out San Francisco sensation brings its competitive wordplay tournament to New York after a ten-year run—with plans to make it a staple.
New York, NY — May 4th, 2026 — After a decade of sold-out shows in San Francisco, including a packed house at Cobb’s Comedy Club during SF Sketchfest, Worldwide Puns is officially expanding to New York City with the NYC Pun Off to launch an ongoing residency at Caveat. The debut show takes place on May 4th, a date chosen with full and unapologetic intent.
Part comedy show, part gladiatorial arena for language nerds, the Pun Off treats one of the most loathed forms of humor—puns—with almost absurd seriousness. Contestants (“punslingers”) battle through elimination rounds, delivering rapid-fire wordplay to a live audience that arrives not only to laugh, but to groan, roll their eyes, and bury their heads in their hands...
“This show is a celebration of the pun - the world’s most loathed and lauded form of humor… where jokes that normally fight for a place at the table get to be the whole feast. The friends that find us here are tired of being punished for wordplay and we offer them a safe space… for puns.” Says co-host Jonah Spear, an O. Henry Pun-Off World Champion, arguably the closest thing the art form has to an official title. Spear co-hosts with longtime friend, comedian, and summer camp director, Brady Gill, both bring years of actual summer camp experience, warmth, irreverence, and playfully competitive spirit to the stage.
The Pun Off built a fiercely devoted following in San Francisco and now sets its sights on the comedy hotspot of New York City. The team plans to establish footing as a regular event for NYC audiences with jokes that toe the line between comedic brilliance and face-palming, eye-rolling head-shakery.
With its debut landing on May the Fourth, the residency launches with a perfectly timed, offbeat entry point - one where the force is strong, and the punchlines are stronger.

"The BAPO is the friendliest, cleverest comedy show I've been to. Actually, "comedy show" is underselling it; it's comedy + performance of skill, like watching people solve Rubik's Cubes. It's funnier than that, though. Usually."

“This testimonial is going to sound really ‘cheesy,’ but I am being sincere when I say how ‘grate’ful I am that the Bay Area Pun Off is a thing. It brings me an un’brie’lievable amount of joy to make a large crowd laugh, and I’ve ‘swiss’ed that life-affirming sound over the past couple years. Also thankful that the fellow performers always cheer one another on, so none of us have to im‘prov-olone’!
